What does NSFW mean?

NSFW stands for “not safe for work”. It is a warning label applied to content — usually sexual, graphic, or explicit — that would be inappropriate to view in a workplace or public setting. In AI chat, NSFW describes platforms and characters that permit explicit adult conversation rather than filtering it.

The label originated on internet forums in the late 1990s as a courtesy warning before a link, and it stuck because it is genuinely useful: it describes the viewing situation rather than making a moral judgement about the content itself.

In the AI companion category the term has narrowed. When a platform advertises itself as NSFW, it is claiming that its models will engage with explicit content rather than refusing partway through a conversation. That claim is worth testing, because the model and the product policy are separate layers — a service can be marketed as NSFW and still break character to decline a request.

The opposite label, SFW, describes filtered platforms such as Character.AI that restrict sexual content by design.
