What is roleplay?
Roleplay is collaborative storytelling in which each participant speaks and acts as a character rather than as themselves. In AI chat, it means the model stays in a defined persona across a conversation while you play your own part, building a shared scene turn by turn.

Roleplay predates the internet by decades, from tabletop games to play-by-post forums. What carried over into AI chat is the core convention: participants agree on a setting and personas, then stay in them, and narration is usually separated from dialogue.
The quality of AI roleplay depends less on how good any single reply is than on consistency across a long thread. A model that writes a beautiful opening but forgets the character's established history forty messages later fails the actual use case. This is why memory length, rather than response quality, is the feature most worth comparing between platforms — and why it is a paid-tier upgrade almost everywhere.
